Days 49 & 50 – Waskish, MN, Sax-Zim Bog, Superior National Forest, Duluth, MN

What a Birthday weekend!! I leave Minnesota after looting the countryside, adding 23 species for a total of 411 birds for 2017!

I never had a desire to come to these parts. I hate cold weather and yes, I admit, I had preconceived notions. What a difference a week makes!

I love Minnesota now. Even after driving more than 1600 miles, I was stricken by the beauty of this snow-covered countryside. The weather was bitter cold when I arrived but by Saturday it was in the 40s and downright balmy.

It helped that I was birding with John Richardson for several days and then today, with Frank Nicoletti. Two very respected guides and men. I learned, I laughed, I made new friends. I also had a chance to bird alone a few days.

The collection of birds I saw have left a big impression. 4 Owls and 3 Grouse species!! Many life birds. It’s hard to explain how surreal it is to basically make a wish list and have it all come true.

I’m a little sad to be leaving but hey, I get to go to British Columbia now…with my passport this time!
