Today is a very big day for me. I end my Florida Big Year with 326 species of birds seen in 2016. I am very proud of this number since I was only here for 7 months. This exceeds the number of birds I had seen in Florida in 13 years combined!
Tomorrow starts what may be the most incredible year of my life as I take this show “on the road” and attempt a North American Big Year for 2017. For those of you who haven’t seen the movie, a Big Year is an informal competition in which birders attempt to see or hear the largest number of species of birds in one calendar year. There are 914 wild bird species in North America. Many birders hope to break the 700 barrier in their lifetimes, I have to do this in one year. There are only 2 women who have accomplished this. Lynn Barber in 2005 with 723 species and today Laura Keene ends her Big Year with an astounding 759+3 provisionals!! I would be humbled to join them.
I will appreciate the support of my family and friends as I try to accomplish this monumental task. I hope to have my blog up in a couple of days if you are interested in following my journey. Happy New Year to everyone!! No champagne for me tonight, birding starts at 6:30 a.m.
