Hi, I’m Yve Morrell. This year is a big year for me. I ended my Florida 2016 Big Year with 326 species of birds seen. I am very proud of this number since I was only here for 7 months. This exceeds the number of birds I had seen in Florida in my 13 years combined!
2017 starts what may be the most incredible year of my life as I take this show “on the road” and attempt an ABA Big Year. Everyone needs an adventure in their life – right?
For those of you who haven’t seen the movie, “The Big Year”, it’s an informal competition in which birders attempt to see or hear the largest number of species of birds in one calendar year. There are 914 wild bird species in North America. Many birders hope to break the 700 barrier in their entire lifetimes — I am attempting to do this in one year – or it’s not an ABA Big Year!
There are only 2 women who have accomplished this. Lynn Barber in 2005 with 723 species and at the nd of 2016, Laura Keene ended her Big Year with an astounding 759+3 provisionals!! I would be humbled to join them.
I will appreciate the support of my family and friends as I set out to accomplish this monumental task. Happy New Year to everyone!! No champagne for me tonight, birding starts at 6:30 a.m.
