Day 9 – Los Angeles, CA

We started the day in the rain, windy and cold. A big change in 24 hours! Our first stop was Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve in Huntington Beach. There were ducks everywhere which of course for me was heaven.

We worked our way up to Los Angeles stopping to see a Eurasian Wigeon in a local park, looking unsuccesfully for Tufted Duck in the Santa Ana River but picking up Cinnamon Teal, Common Merganser and Allen’s Hummingbird. Then it was off to bird the streets of Compton looking for the star of the day: Spotted Dove. Their population has declined dramatically so we were thrilled to find not only one but four!!!

Steve Ritt, our guide, is not only good at what he does, he knows all the best places to eat. We had another fabulous lunch and headed to Playa del Rey to look for shorebirds on the jetties. Highlight birds were Surfbird, close-ups of Wandering Tattler, Black Oystercatcher, Bonaparte’s, Heermann’s, Western and California Gulls.
